The Unsupervised brand started as a podcast with a bit of a silly origin. The podcast is about 2 people just having a chat about a video game they enjoy. I usually invite a friend that I know appreciates a video game I am familiar with and we talk about it. I've created and recorded 5 podcasts for my project at NZ Radio Training School. I have uploaded 4 podcasts and have planned many more. It's gone through some trial and error finding the style of production and execution that I like and adhere to the school's curriculum.
When coming up with the concept of the Unsupervised podcast I wanted to just be able to talk about video games with friends, but I didn't want it to be a super stretched out and long one. With having a 20-30 minute podcast in mind, I recorded my first one with my brother Josh and we recorded for under an hour. Now this was my first one and I hadn't structured or planned it well. After the editing phases and the requirement of it being shorter, I wasn't meeting the demands of my teachers or myself. So I scrapped that and redid my overview of my podcast. I first realised it took too long describing the game and we never talked about things we liked, so I decided for my next ones I would skip the descriptive parts and go straight into the enjoyable things we like. I also had more points to talk about if the conversation started to die out.
The next time I recorded a podcast it was better and faster, recording two podcasts. Redoing one with my brother and one with my friend, both ending up 30ish minutes which I was happy with. After recording my third podcast which was about retro games, a topic I wasn't familiar with, I started getting the hang of podcasting for the prep and production side of it. My 4th and 5th one I used a studio at MOVE space in Dominion Rd to record as it was closer to the city for guest convenience. I really enjoyed these podcasts as they were with my best friend, they were also timed perfectly.
After some time with editing I decided to begin uploading and promoting my podcast. My first step was setting up the uploading platform. I had chosen Spotify as its system is very generous with free options and also user friendly. After setting up the account, I've had begun starting to promote it, I created an Instagram as its the most used social media for the demographic I want to target and uploaded multiple stories about it and linked it on my main account, soon after it got a bit of attention from my friends and family members. Each podcast I tease upcoming episodes and upload a story while recording as a "behind the scenes" and a post to launch the newest episode.
At the NZ Radio Training School, we had a special guest Charlotte Cook visit and talk to us about podcasts. This was great, my enjoyment for podcasts was growing and she has lots of experience having just won NZ Podcaster of the year. Charlotte spoke to us on how she views podcasting as storytelling and used examples for many ways it can do so, even including sound effects when editing. I listened and was worried as my podcasts were more discussion not storytelling, but she explained it in a way that made me want to add sound effects so it was more entertaining and enjoyable for listeners. I'm taking more time with editing for the next one to do just that.
The future of the Unsupervised podcast is that I want to have an episode for each of my friends, I believe that's a fun personal goal. I want to continue it outside of my school and understand the production and editing side more to create my own style. As for promoting, I've added it to my website, once that's finalised I can advertise each podcast episode alongside my brand for potential employers to look at like a portfolio.
